Director (w/m/d) (successor to Prof. Dr. Sebastian Lentz) combined with a W3 professorship for Regional Geography

The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) and the Faculty of Physics and Earth Sciences at Leipzig University are seeking from 1 April 2024 to fill the position of a Director (w/m/d) (successor to Prof. Dr. Sebastian Lentz) combined with a W3 professorship for Regional Geography to be filled within the framework of a joint appointment procedure.

The Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography (IfL) analyses social processes from a geographical perspective. It is the only non-university research institution for geography in the German-speaking world. The IfL aims to initiate international professional debates through groundbreaking theoretical and methodological stimuli and to make its research results accessible to society. It places particular emphasis on the innovative further development of its research topics in co-operation with its research infrastructures, such as the Cartography Working Group, the Geographical Central Library and important scientific collections in the Archive for Geography. As a member of the Leibniz Association, the Institute is funded by the Federal Republic of Germany and its states and is mandated to provide excellent research and transfer of knowledge.

The director steers the IfL in terms of its content, programming and structure in collegial co- operation with the management staff. As a member of the Executive Board, he/she is legally responsible for the management and external representation of the Institute. The director makes an internationally visible contribution to content-related, methodological and conceptual debates in human geography. He or she represents the research of the IfL internally and externally, especially at the interface of science, the public and politics. The professor represents the subject area of regional geography at the university to the extent of 2 SWS in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programme.

We are looking for an internationally recognised personality with a very good network in human geography, who is very familiar with the German and international science system and has extraordinary innovative potential in the development and establishment of new research fields. Co-operation with the University of Leipzig includes Collaborative Research Centres and Excellence Initiatives. In addition, active participation in shaping existing and future research networks in Central Germany and the Leibniz Association is expected.

We are looking for a personality who meets the following requirements for these activities:

  • the requirements for the appointment according to § 58 SächsHSFG
  • completed doctorate as well as habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements in human geography
  • significant contributions to national and international debates in human geography and comprehensive knowledge and experience in at least one of the IfL’s main research areas
  • Personal verifiable competence and experience in the management of research units or research networks, as well as a high degree of interpersonal/conflict- and problem- solving skills and experience in the management of scientific and non-scientific personnel
  • excellent networking in the national and international professional community
  • experience in strategic planning, the acquisition and implementation of national and international collaborative projects, science management and transfer
  • fluent in business German and English

Preferable

  • regional relevance of your own research to Europe, if applicable, with a focus on Central and Eastern Europe
  • knowledge of another European language
  • experience in setting up and operating research infrastructures
