New source material for geography education research

The IfL has begun digitising its extensive collection of wall maps.

Wall maps have been an important visual aid in geography lessons at schools and universities since the 19th century. Today, they have largely been replaced by digital media and are hardly ever kept. With the acquisition of the wall map collection from the Department of Geography at the University of Bonn in summer 2022, our inventory have grown to more than 1500. We have now begun to digitise and catalogue the entire wall map inventoy. This will make further important source material on the history of geographical education available for research in the coming year.
