The University of Bamberg has appointed Haik Thomas Porada as honorary professor for the field of historical geography.
"The appointment strengthens historical geography as a so-called small subject at the University of Bamberg and supports the long-standing cooperation with the Research Department of Historical Geographies of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography," said University President Godehard Ruppert when handing over the certificate of appointment on March 10, 2020.
In recent years, Professor Andreas Dix has successfully established a Master's programme in historical geography at the Institute of Geography at Bamberg University. For many semesters Haik Thomas Porada has been contributing his experience in historical-geographical research and teaching as a lecturer here.
Haik Thomas Porada studied history, geography and Scandinavian studies in Greifswald, Marburg and Stockholm. He received his doctorate from the Faculty of Philosophy at Greifswald University in 2006 with a thesis on the significance of fisheries management for early modern state formation on the southern Baltic Sea coast. Since 2002 he has been responsible for the editing of the book series "Landschaften in Deutschland" (Landscapes in Germany) at the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography, which the IfL publishes together with the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig. His research interests range from historical and geographical regional studies to regional history; so far he has mainly worked on regions in Central Europe and the Baltic Sea region. Since 2017 he has been chairman of the Historical Commission for Pomerania with members in Germany, Poland, Denmark, Sweden and Austria.
