Living as a Student in Leipzig

The research project links into studies undertaken by the IfL regarding residential districts, decisions regarding residential locations and shifts in residential patterns within cities. The focal point is the selection of a place to live, by students in Leipzig city and surrounding areas; also studied are the effects, to be deduced from these choices, for the economic and cultural development of districts of Leipzig, particularly with regard to specific urban environments:

  • What effects does students‘ choice of home location have on the Leipzig market for flats and property, against the background of particular local features, such as high housing vacancy rates and initiatives towards so-called guardian buildings.
  • What statements can be made, based on students’ selection of a place to live within a small area, about sensitivity to distance with regard to Leipzig’s university and other institutions of higher education?
  • Which dynamic characterises the geographical catchment area of Leipzig’s institutions of higher education / its university, in the period since the build-up of a higher education landscape in eastern Germany, and since the associated emergence of competition against other cities/towns with institutions of higher education? (objective: provision of fundamental data with the purpose of monitoring the institutions of higher education in terms of their specific catchment areas)

The data obtained are to be analysed by means of Geographic Information System (GIS) resources and the results visualised in topic-specific maps. The basic information and analyses are also intended to be of benefit for urban planning and urban development professionals.
